“Underground Inspirations.” 2009 Summer/Fall issue
I’m so excited to have my “Fishnet Stockings” painting featured in the current issue of Carmel Magazine!

It was used as the lead image for an article about The Alternative Cafe gallery in Seaside, CA which featured my work during their recent “Garter Belts and Gasoline II” art show.
Although this painting (based on the image of the amazing retro pinup and Gretsch Guitar spokes-model Kim Falcon) has been very popular and was featured in several other publications, I’m especially proud to have it appear in Carmel Magazine. Carmel, CA has always held a special place in my heart because of my total admiration (and school girl infatuation) for one of it’s most famous residents and one time mayor, Clint Eastwood (whose photo also appears among the pages of this issue!).
the article (on pages 210-213) is available on-line by going to the link below:

I’m so excited to announce that I have set up a channel on YouTube, www.youtube.com/susanheidi to corral all my favorite videos and make them easier to share. Viewers will be able to find interviews I’ve done, clips from past shows, and my favorite how to’s on everything from Pin-Up makeup and hair to art techniques. There are a few videos up already, and I’ll be adding more in the days to come.

My retro style Pin-Up art was a big hit at the NY Comic Con! I was happy to meet so many people who are fans of the genre. It was a grueling 3 days - you can just imagine what it’s like for an artist who usually works alone in a studio to abruptly switch gears and spend 9+ hours a day talking non-stop. My voice was nearly gone by the end of the day Sunday. I had so much fun meeting everyone and really appreciate each and every compliment I received. There is nothing in the world like having something you’ve created admired by others. I have posted some pictures on myspace and there’s already a video interview I did posted on Edward Champion’s Reluctant Habits. I did a few other interviews, which I’ll post links to as soon as they are live.

To recap the weekend:
- Comic Con’s are amazing places where everyone is having fun - it’s very contagious
- having a booth on the way to the restrooms makes for great traffic
- kudos to my two youngest fans - two little girls who know what they like
- drinking lots of water saved me from losing my voice altogether
- once again, I wasn’t able to get around to visit with other artists - many, many thanks to those who made their way over to say hello
- at least as many women as men love pinups - thanks to all those guys who let their ladies browse!
- Evil Ink Comics and Epic Proportions were the best booth neighbors I could ask for!
- New Yorkers, costumed fans, and celebrities made for awesome people watching
I’ve already made arrangements to be back at NY Comic Con next year (October 8-10, 2010) once again in booth #1906 - hope to see you there

Some last minute changes have made it possible for me to have a booth at this year’s NY Comic Con. I’m excited to be able to display lots more work and hopefully interact with many more fans!

There is an interactive map on the NY Comic Con website to help attendees find their way around the exhibit hall. My booth is located just off the first main aisle. I’m happy to have neighbors like Epic Proportions, Evil Ink Comics, and Heavy Metal magazine (just around the corner).
I hope to see lots of you in NYC this weekend!

Picking up my mail a few weeks ago, an image on the cover of a catalog caught my eye. It looked very familiar, no, too familiar (like an old friend). Upon closer examination I realized it was my pinup titled “Fishnet Stockings” on the cover of Bud Plant’s Incorrigible catalog! What a thrill!
This painting was recently published in “The World’s Greatest Erotic Art, vol. 2” and the book is now being sold through BudsArtBooks.com

Aprons were a mainstay in the kitchens of housewives in the 40’s and 50’s - Who can think of “I Love Lucy” or “Leave it to Beaver” without visions of Lucille Ricardo and June Cleaver donning an apron? I’ve started work today on a pinup that is donning an apron in the kitchen - and lookin’ good!
As more of us are tighteneing the purse strings and taking on household chores, aprons seem to be making a comeback. To see what’s cookin’ with aprons, you may want to check out a new publication by Stampington & Company entitled Apronology, which “flirts with the many uses and looks of the apron”. The mag can be ordered online now and will hit newsstands in February.

Switzerland’s pinup model Zoe Scarlett (subject for my painting titled “Christmas Morn”, below) and Retro Pinup Sari, from Germany, have teamed up to do a photo shoot for Zoe’s 2009 Animal Rescue calendar. I can’t wait to see the calendar, but in the meantime, it’s great fun to watch the ladies as they document their time together as seen on Sari’s blog, The Pin up Diaries.
